焦炭濾料主要用于高爐煉鐵和用于銅、鉛、鋅、鈦、銻、汞等有色金屬的鼓風(fēng)爐冶煉，起還原劑、發(fā)熱劑和料柱骨架作用。煉鐵高爐采用焦炭代替木炭，為現(xiàn)代高爐的大型化奠定了基礎(chǔ)，是冶金史上的一個(gè)重大里程碑。為使高爐操作達(dá)到較好的技術(shù)經(jīng)濟(jì)指標(biāo)，冶煉用焦炭（冶金焦）必須具有適當(dāng)?shù)幕瘜W(xué)性質(zhì)和物理性質(zhì)，包括冶煉過程中的熱態(tài)性質(zhì)。焦炭除大量用于煉鐵和有色金屬冶煉（冶金焦）外，還用于鑄造、化工、電石和鐵合金，其質(zhì)量要求有所不同。如鑄造用焦，一般要求粒度大、氣孔率低、固定碳高和硫分低；化工氣化用焦，對(duì)強(qiáng)度要求不嚴(yán)，但要求反應(yīng)性好，灰熔點(diǎn)較高；電石生產(chǎn)用焦要求盡量提高固定碳含量。
