    碳化硅英文名稱：Silicon Carbide,俗稱金剛砂。純碳化硅是無色透明的晶體。工業(yè)碳化硅因所含雜質(zhì)的種類和含量不同，而呈淺黃、綠、藍乃至黑色，透明度隨其純度不同而異。碳化硅有黑碳化硅和綠碳化硅兩個常用的基該品種，都屬α-SiC。1 黑碳化硅含SiC約95%，其韌性高于綠碳化硅，大多用于加工抗張強度低的材料，如玻璃、陶瓷、石材、耐火材料、鑄鐵和有色金屬等。2 綠碳化硅含SiC約97%以上，自銳性好，大多用于加工硬質(zhì)合金、鈦合金和光學(xué)玻璃，也用于珩磨汽缸套和精磨高速鋼刀具。此外還有立方碳化硅，它是以特殊工藝制取的黃綠色晶體，用以制作的磨具適于軸承的超精加工，可使表面粗糙度從Ra32～0.16微米一次加工到Ra0.04～0.02微米。
    耐火材料和耐腐蝕材料---主要因為碳化硅具有高熔點（分解度）、化學(xué)惰性和抗熱振性，所以碳化硅能用于磨具、陶瓷制品燒成窯爐中用棚板和匣缽、煉鋅工業(yè)豎缸蒸餾爐用碳化硅磚、鋁電解槽襯、坩鍋、小件爐材等多種碳化硅陶瓷制品。
    碳化硅由于化學(xué)性能穩(wěn)定、導(dǎo)熱系數(shù)高、熱膨脹系數(shù)小、耐磨性能好，除作磨料用外，還有很多其他用途，例如：以特殊工藝把碳化硅粉末涂布于水輪機葉輪或汽缸體的內(nèi)壁，可提高其耐磨性而延長使用壽命1～2倍；用以制成的高級耐火材料，耐熱震、體積小、重量輕而強度高，節(jié)能效果好。低品級碳化硅（含SiC約85%）是極好的脫氧劑，用它可加快煉鋼速度，并便于控制化學(xué)成分，提高鋼的質(zhì)量。此外，碳化硅還大量用于制作電熱元件硅碳棒。碳化硅的硬度很大,莫氏硬度為9.5級，僅次于世界上最硬的金剛石（10級），具有優(yōu)良的導(dǎo)熱性能，是一種半導(dǎo)體，高溫時能抗氧化。
    利用碳化硅具有耐腐蝕、耐高溫、強度大、導(dǎo)熱性能良好、抗沖擊等特性，碳化硅一方面可用于各種冶煉爐襯、高溫爐窯構(gòu)件、碳化硅板、襯板、支撐件、匣缽、碳化硅坩堝等。另一方面可用于有色金屬冶煉工業(yè)的高溫間接加熱材料，如豎罐蒸餾爐、精餾爐塔盤、鋁電解槽、銅熔化爐內(nèi)襯、鋅粉爐用弧型板、熱電偶保護管等；用于制作耐磨、耐蝕、耐高溫等高級碳化硅陶瓷材料；還可以制做火箭噴管、燃氣輪機葉片等。此外，碳化硅也是高速公路、航空飛機跑道太陽能熱水器等的理想材料之一。
